External hard drives are basically hard drives (HDD) or solid state drives (SSD) that are wrapped in their own protective casing and connect to your computer from the outside as opposed to the inside. Flash drives are external drives, but they aren't as fast, and they don't usually store as much space as their larger external hard drive. Microsoft word for apple student. To be recognised by iPadOS, the attached USB storage device must be formatted to FAT, FAT32, exFAT or APFS with a single data partition. As the iPad has limited power capabilities, dependent upon the Storage Device, an external power source is often required.

If your iPad Pro has a Lightning port, you will need to use an Apple Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter to directly connect USB devices to the iPad. This adapter has both a USB 3.0 Type-A connector and an additional Lightning port to supply power, from your charger, to both the iPad and connected device. The external charger must be rated at 12W or more.

If you have one of the newest iPad Pro models, with a USB-C connector, you may need to utilise a powered USB hub (i.e., it has its own source of power) - connecting both the iPad Pro and the storage device to ports on the hub.

Moving the iTunes folder to the external drive is pointless when it comes to backups of iOS devices.

Backups of iOS devices are not kept in the iTunes folder as such moving that folder will not do very much, other than maybe clear some space on the onboard hard drive that can then be used to backup iOS devices.

You cannot change the location of iOS backups in iTunes unfortunately, but what you can do, is move them off the hard drive after the backup has been made, and then delete them from the hard drive through iTunes. Should you need them again, you can move them back, and iTunes should pick them up.

There's a way to have the backups be placed on an external hard drive automatically as they are made, and subsequently be read from there, but its a bit more involved.
